The Poet at the Ponds

The Anti-Religious Poet The Commission Ivan Nikolaevich Ponyrev, known as Homeless, is a young poet working for the literary journal Massolit. His editor, Mikhail Alexandrovich Berlioz, has commissioned an anti-religious poem from him. Ivan has written a poem about Jesus, but Berlioz criticizes it for making Jesus appear too real. The Conversation Sitting at the Patriarch's Ponds, Berlioz lecturing Ivan about the non-existence of Jesus. They are interrupted by a strange foreigner, who argues that Jesus did exist. Ivan is annoyed and suspicious of the foreigner. The Prophecy The foreigner, Woland, predicts Berlioz's death. Ivan is outraged, but moments later, Berlioz is killed by a tramcar exactly as foretold. Ivan is horrified and begins to chase the mysterious consultant.

The Mad Chase

The Pursuit The Hunt for the Professor Ivan, convinced that the foreigner is a murderer, chases him through the streets of Moscow. He encounters a strange cat and a long man in a pince-nez, who are part of the retinue. He loses them but continues his frantic search. The Bathing Incident Ivan jumps into the Moscow River, hoping to cool down, but his clothes are stolen. He is left in his underwear, carrying a candle and an icon. He decides to go to Griboedov's, the literary restaurant, to warn others. The Scandal at Griboedov's At Griboedov's, Ivan bursts in, half-naked, shouting about the consultant. The literary crowd is shocked and calls the police. Ivan is tied up and taken to a psychiatric clinic, diagnosed with schizophrenia.

The Clinic

The Diagnosis The Examination At Stravinsky's clinic, Ivan is examined by the head doctor, Professor Stravinsky. He is given a sedative and put in a private room. He tries to explain his story but is not believed. The Split Personality Ivan begins to argue with himself, one part of him still believing in the conspiracy, the other becoming more rational. He decides to write a statement about the consultant, but the task is too difficult. The Storm During a thunderstorm, Ivan weeps in frustration. The doctor gives him an injection, and he becomes calmer. He starts to accept his situation.

Meeting the Master

The Night Visitor The Mysterious Guest Late one night, a man appears on Ivan's balcony. He is a patient from a neighboring room, who introduces himself as the Master. He has stolen keys and can move around the clinic. The Story of the Master The Master tells Ivan his story: how he wrote a novel about Pontius Pilate, how he was persecuted, and how he ended up in the clinic. Ivan is fascinated and feels a deep connection. The Disciple Ivan listens to the Master's account of his meeting with Woland and realizes that the Master is the true author of the story he heard at the Ponds. He becomes the Master's disciple, promising to stop writing poetry.

The Transformation

The New Man The Recovery Ivan gradually recovers under the care of Stravinsky. He accepts his experience as a spiritual awakening. He no longer writes poetry but becomes a professor of history. The Annual Vision Every year, at the spring full moon, Ivan remembers the strange events. He sits on a bench at the Patriarch's Ponds, thinking about Pilate and the Master. He is haunted by the memory but also enlightened. The Legacy Ivan becomes the guardian of the Master's story. He understands the truth about cowardice and mercy. His transformation from a naive poet to a wise scholar is complete.
